The Luohu district government kicked off its campus garbage sorting project in the Shenzhen Cuizhu Foreign Language Experimental School on Sept 29.

The project will cover all 79 primary and middle schools in Luohu. According to the government, all 505 residential communities will strictly implement the garbage classification policy by the end of this year.

The faculty and students of the school organized some activities and games to raise people’s awareness of the importance of sorting rubbish, and educate the public on the environmentally-friendly practice. A total of 324 families took part in the activities.

Luohu produces 1,500 tons of life rubbish every day and enforced a garbage sorting system in 2017, which covers all residential communities, schools and public institutes.

Currently, about 50 percent of domestic garbage is sorted and categorized. The district will spare no effort to realize the goal of having all garbage categorized as early as possible. Schools are important frontiers for authorities to educate young people on the urgency of adopting this practice. It is hoped that the children can develop this habit at an early age.

The students are showing interest in learning more about garbage sorting, and many of them are beginning to take the initiative to not only sort garbage themselves, but also to remind their families to do the same.
