The open day, with a theme of "Promote ecological protection and build a beautiful homeland," is part of a series of events to introduce the project to the general public and raise awareness of the need to save water and protect the environment.

Since the central route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project went into operation in December 2014, over 24.9 billion cubic meters of water has been diverted to Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei province, and Henan province, benefiting more than 53 million people.

Visitors of the event were briefed on its operation, and the economic, social and ecological benefits it is bringing to regions along the route.

A drone equipped with high-definition cameras operating near the Hutuo River Inverted Siphon project site, in Shijiazhuang, sent real-time video footage to a large-screen television to give a general picture of the project for the visitors.

Officials of the Hebei sub-bureau said they use the unmanned aerial vehicle on a regular basis to check out the project's operation in case of any emergencies and deficiencies.

Tian Shuyuan, a college student in Shijiazhuang, said she was impressed by the benefits of water diversion and that she herself felt the ecological improvements in her daily life.

"Today's visit gives me an opportunity to see the water diversion project up close," Tian said. "I have tasted the water brought from the south, and it is so clear and tastes very good."

"I will do my best and also inspire more people around me to save water and protect the environment."

According to statistics, around 4.7 billion cubic meters of water has been diverted to Hebei province, and 1.2 billion cubic meters of water has been replenished to rivers and lakes along the route over the past five years, greatly improving the water quality and increasing the underground water level in the region.
