A plenary meeting of the organizing committee for "Experience Beijing" Olympic test events was convened on Tuesday. Zhang Jiandong, deputy mayor of Beijing and executive vice president of the committee, gave an update on the preparations for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. He said all things are proceeding as scheduled, and the construction of venues and infrastructure has advanced on all fronts.

As rehearsal for the Winter Olympics, the "Experience Beijing" test events involve all competition venues and major non-competition venues in the three competition zones: Beijing, Yanqing, and Zhangjiakou.

In Beijing, the progress on the project of the National Speed Skating Oval is over 70%. The main steel structure of the Shougang Skiing Platform has been finished, and the renovation of the National Aquatics Center and the Capital Indoor Stadium is going as planned.

In Yanqing, the progress on building the National Alpine Ski Center has reached 79%, and the racing courses and supporting facilities for the upcoming Alpine Skiing World Cup will be finished by end of this month.

In Zhangjiakou, 90% of the work on the National Cross-Country Center and the National Biathlon Center has been done. Construction has been sped up on the National Ski Jumping Center as scheduled; the Halfpipe, Slopestyle and Parallel Giant Slalom courses are ready for use at Genting Snow Park, and the venue has already hosted FIS Alpine Ski World Cup events.

As to infrastructure, track laying is finished for the Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway; the plateau section of the Beijing-Chongli highway has been opened to traffic; and the 7.9-kilometer utility tunnel in Yanqing zone has been put into operation.

According to Zhang, per requirements of the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee, test events will be staged to cover all sports 10 to 24 months prior to the opening of the Games. All test events of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will be entitled “Experience Beijing,” and the committee was formed in January to preside over event management, marketing, and financial management.

The “Experience Beijing” test events consist of three types: sport events, field-testing, and comprehensive testing. Sport events include 15 sports featured in the Winter Olympics and five in the Winter Paralympics. Three of the events will be held in 2020, starting with the Alpine Skiing World Cup hosted by Yanqing in February 2020. Field-testing aims to ensure and improve the capacities of competition venues and priority areas. And comprehensive testing is scheduled to take place between February and April 2021. Events will be held concurrently across all three zones in order to run a full-scale test of venue operations as well as cross-area and cross-sector coordination.
