The 2019 International Symposium for Beijing Central Axis World Heritage Application was held on Wednesday in Beijing. The event was attended by 14 foreign world heritage experts and 30 domestic scholars in the fields of heritage protection, archaeology, and planning. Officials from the Beijing Municipal Government also participated in the meeting.
The Central Axis is the best preserved core area of the old city of Beijing. It is 7.8 kilometers long, stretching from the Drum Tower and Bell Tower in the north of the city, across the Wanning Bridge, Jingshan Park, the Forbidden City, to the Yongding Gate in the south.
Organized by the National Cultural Heritage Administration and the Beijing Municipal Government, and sponsored by the Beijing Bureau of Cultural Heritage and ICOMOS China, this seminar was themed with "The Prominent Value and Heritage Components of Beijing's Central Axis."
The experts held discussions regarding the heritage value, comparative studies, criterion, application strategies, and heritage components while visiting the heritage sites such as Jingshan Park, the Tian'anmen Square, the Imperial Ancestral Temple, the Sheji Altar, and the Qianmen Street. They gave high praise to the preservation of the Central Axis.
Du Feijin, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Beijing Municipal Committee and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, said he hopes that this seminar will serve as a bridge for world heritage protection and international cooperation and for more profound dialogues and academic exchanges, and eventually contribute to the successful application of the Central Axis to become a world heritage site.
