The Beijing Public Transport Corporation (BPTC) announced its plan for smart buses at the 5G-Era Urban Smart Public Transport Summit last weekend. According to the plan, users of the Beijing Bus mobile app can use embedded QR code to take the subway and check the crowdedness of buses. The company said it will also unveil other 5G-powered initiatives, such as on-time buses and real-time monitoring of driving behaviors.
As part of the efforts to promote its smart bus service network, the BPTC will test the function to check bus crowdedness on its Beijing Bus app in December. Users will also be able to check the location of the bus in the app. Buses shown with green dots represent available seats, yellow dots mean all seats are occupied, and red dots warn overcrowding on the buses.
Zhu Kai, general manager of the BPTC, said the company is carrying out pilot plans to make 98 bus lines strictly on time. Current location tracking of buses relies on 4G and 3G networks. With 5G, the accuracy of real-time bus arrival forecasting will increase significantly.
Moreover, 5G will help with safe driving as it enables real-time monitoring of driving behaviors, gives warning of dangerous driving, and provides 360-degree monitoring of surrounding roads.
