In recent years, China's southern city of Shenzhen has enjoyed remarkable economic and social development, while it is also a pioneer in protecting and improving the eco-environment, according to scholars attending the Shenzhen Eco-environmental Protection Forum held in Beijing last Tuesday.

The forum reviewed Shenzhen's experience in eco-environmental protection over the past 40 years, and the prospects of using eco-friendly Shenzhen as a model for other places in China.

“Eco-environmental protection has to be supported by green industries, and Shenzhen did a great job in its industrial transformation,” said Chen Yongqin, professor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Yang Chaofei, former chief engineer of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, argued that Shenzhen’s economy is developing rapidly and has become an important engine for the country. Its environmental protection also ranks top among China's cities.

“Shenzhen boasts national nature reserves, national wetland parks, national geological parks and national scenic spots. Its whole system of protected areas is relatively complete,” said Ouyang Zhiyun, director of the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Shenzhen has seen a remarkable improvement in air pollution control, and the figure for days rated as “smoggy” has dropped from 187 in 2004 to 20 in 2018. “Initiatives to combat air pollution are now being carried out in many regions across the country, and Shenzhen can serve as a reference,” Wang Jinnan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering emphasized.

With regard to environmental cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and in the Shenzhen-Dongguan-Huizhou economic circle, Ge Chazhong, researcher and director of the policy department of the Chinese Academy of Environmental Planning noted the many achievements that have been made. “Shenzhen should provide environmental services and products jointly with its surrounding areas,” he added.

The forum brought together participants from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Shenzhen Bureau of Ecological Environment, experts and academics.
