The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) held its 166th General Assembly in Paris on Nov 27. Representatives from China gave a final report of the International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 Beijing (Beijing Expo 2019), winning praises from the BIE and its member states.

In their report, Chinese representatives summarized their work in attracting exhibitors, exhibiting and demonstrating horticultural products, cultural exchange, cross-border cooperation, green development, and the sustainable use of facilities.

The expo took place in Beijing's Yanqing district from April 29 to Oct. 9. It was a Category A1 international horticultural exhibition accredited by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and recognized by BIE. Eighty-six countries, 24 international organizations, and 34 Chinese regional government authorities took part in the event, along with 120 non-official participants, which included companies and institutions from home and abroad.

Beijing Expo 2019 advocated the philosophy of "ecosystem first" and "people-oriented," demonstrated advanced technologies in horticulture, showcased more than 150 rare plants and 70-plus newly adopted tree species, and organized more than 140 professional competitions in categories such as garden design and indoor flowering plants.

The organizers placed a premium on biodiversity in the planning and operation of the event, with the site's wetland functions being fully restored and the area's ecology and environment significantly enhanced. Apart from the stunning landscapes, a self-sustaining ecosystem also constituted a lasting legacy of the event.

BIE Secretary General Vicente G. Loscertales praised Beijing Expo 2019, saying he was deeply impressed by how the most advanced designs and technologies had been adopted to improve the professional standards of the event.

AIPH Secretary General Tim Briercliffe also spoke highly of the organization and execution of Beijing Expo 2019. He said the event raised Category A1 of exhibitions to a new level, and that the green development notions it advocated had left a mark on all participants and visitors.
