A seminar on honoring and preserving China's 20th century architectural heritages was held in Beijing on Tuesday. Titled "Homage to Classic Architecture," the seminar was sponsored by the Chinese Society of Cultural Relics and the Architectural Society of China.

During the event, a fourth batch of structures were named to the list of classic architectural works in China since 1949. Among the 98 newly added buildings and structures, 21 are in Beijing – most among Chinese cities. They include the Yanxi Palace complex of the Palace Museum, China Children's Art Theatre, the former exhibition hall of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, etc.

The old auditorium of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) is a highlight receiving the honor. Built under the directives of former Premier Zhou Enlai and completed in 1956, the structure was the venue for CPPCC meetings and the offices of the standing committee members. According to experts, the architecture stands out for its dignified, graceful appearance as well as splendid interiors. With the CPPCC emblem hanging above the gate, it is an iconic architectural achievement with historical significance.

Also joining the list is the auditorium of China's Central Party School. Began in September 1957 and completed in September 1959, the auditorium was a masterful work of renowned architect Dai Nianci. With more than 12,000 square meters of floor space, the auditorium comprises a foyer, an audience hall, a stage, a lounge area, classrooms, and auxiliary rooms. A marvel of design was the thin concrete shell roof spanning 7 meters accomplished with an advanced technique for its time. The design was reminiscent of the Yaodong cave dwelling in Yan'an, the former location of China's Central Party School.

The list of classic Chinese architectural heritages was initiated in 2016. It now includes 396 important buildings and structures from the 20th century.
