The China Alliance for Science Literacy, an initiative proposed by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), was launched at a ceremony on Wednesday in a bid to coordinate and drive the science communication efforts of non-governmental sectors.

The alliance has so far been joined by 125 large enterprises, media organizations, scientific societies, institutions of higher learning, and research culture institutes.

In a manifesto released at the launch ceremony, the alliance said it will focus on building science communication platforms for non-governmental sectors, develop the science communication cause to promote public good, boost the science communication industry and expand the supply of science communication products and services. The alliance will also introduce awards for extraordinary science communication efforts, conduct international exchanges and cooperation, contribute to the building of China's system of innovation, and integrate into the global innovation network.

Han Qide, honorary president of CAST, will serve as the inaugural president of the alliance.

Also at the launch ceremony, seven enterprises donated 37 million yuan (US$5.28 million) to a special fund for science literacy that is under the Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology Museums in China. The donation will be used exclusively to support the science communication efforts of non-governmental sectors.
