The fifth meeting of the fifth district committee of the people's political consultative conference of Luohu District, its top political advisory body, was convened on Jan. 2.

Committee Chair Wu Yuzhong delivered a work report. Last year, members put forward 150 proposals related to development in a wide range of fields, and all had been heeded by the government and transformed into concrete policies or reforms, he said.

For instance, the committee had urged the government to expedite planning and construction of the port economic belt, and merge the Shenzhen Railway Station with the port zone, which had led to concrete actions.

The government takes all proposals seriously, and the Party chief of Luohu and the head of the district government directly supervise their implementation, Wu stressed.

The committee is also in charge of monitoring the way the government exercises power. Last year, it organized 110 activities to supervise the government's practices to ensure difficult reforms, such as those of the medical care system, were able to overcome the resistance of vested interests to ensure available public resources were used to better serve the people.

The committee organized seminars on some key subjects regarding Luohu's development, such as a talent shortage, complicated approval procedures, slow economic transformation and difficult financing, and provided 10 suggestions on how to improve government services, ensure proper industrial policies were carried out and attract talents.

Meanwhile, all nine proposals on education reform had been undertaken by the education bureau, spurring the government to further expand the scale of primary education, and improve quality.

A total of 13 proposals covered urban renovation and environmental protection, which found their way into implementation rules of road-related projects rolled out by the government last year.

The committee donated nearly 1 million yuan ($143,517) to help 2,500 pupils in a primary school in the less-developed Xilin county of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, and 15 families to renovate their dilapidated houses in the Shanglin village in Lufeng.

Wu vowed to deepen the committee's research into some pressing tasks related to building Shenzhen into a pilot demonstration zone of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area this year.

He urged all committee members to stay true to their mission and duties, enhance the professionalism and workability of their proposals, and strengthen their oversight of the government.
