The China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF) on January 13 announced the recipients of its 11th awards for pediatric excellence at a ceremony held at the China Soong Ching Ling Science and Culture Centre for Young People in Beijing.
Six pediatric research projects, including "Innovative Research on the Pathogenesis and Surgical Treatment of Bile Duct Anomalies in Pediatrics", won the Soong Ching Ling Pediatric Medicine Award, while two others won the Soong Ching Ling Pediatric Medical Achievements Award.
Hang Yuanxiang, executive vice-chairman of the CSCLF, explained that the awards are aimed at promoting the development of pediatrics in China, strengthening the training of medical staff in the field, and further improving children's health care systems.
Children's health is an important foundation for sustainable social development. After years of efforts, the health of children in China has improved significantly. According to Yu Yanhong, a member of the Leading Party Members' Group of the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China, China's national neonatal mortality rate, infant mortality rate, and under-five mortality rate were 3.9‰, 6.1‰, and 8.4‰ respectively in 2018. This was down more than 78% compared with rates in 2000, outperforming the averages for middle- and high-income countries.
The Soong Ching Ling Pediatric Award was established by the CSCLF with support from the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China. It aims to commend scientific research achievements in pediatric medicine and encourage pediatric medical workers to dedicate themselves to research in the fields of clinical medicine, basic medicine and public health. Since it was launched in 2006, a total of 87 medical research projects have been recognized with the award.
