Beijing's sub-center in Tongzhou district is planning to establish new green areas of 166.6 square kilometers in 2020, including seven parks and two urban forests.

The urban gardening and greening authorities said they aim to build a forest ecosystem of "two green belts, one green ring, and one green center," together covering a new green area of 4.26 square kilometers in the administrative and central areas in the sub-center.

The greening project in 2020 for the sub-center highlights the "city's green center" in addition to other projects, such as a highway park, an ancient city relics park, the areas surrounding the Universal theme park, and the eastern extension of Guangqu Road.

Green spaces in residential communities are also being established. The sub-center initiated seven projects of leisure parks, such as the Zhangjiawan Park (Phase III) and Liyuan Yunjing Park (Phase I). Meanwhile, urban forests will also be built around Li Yuan and temporary residential areas for employees, featuring more varieties of plants than the parks.

Around the central area of the sub-center, 11 key projects are to be implemented, which will create a green area of 9.7 square kilometers. That includes the Chaobai River Forest Ecological Landscape Area and key greening areas in Huoxia, Majuqiao, and Songzhuang.

On the other hand, the sub-center plans to build four community parks, 10 mini green areas, and 100 kilometers of green roads. It is estimated that, by the end of 2020, the forest coverage rate in the region will reach 34%, a per-person green area of 18 square meters. The goal is for 90% of the sub-center residents to see a green space within 500 meters.
