Beijing will make efforts to develop green technologies and build itself into an innovation center for environmentally friendly technologies with global influence, according to a plan jointly formulated by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform and the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission.

Green technologies will be developed and applied in eight fields, including air pollution prevention and control, water conservation and water environment, energy saving and environmental services, solid waste decreasing and recycling, restoration of polluted areas and soil, use of modern energy, smart transportation, and eco-agriculture and eco-forestry.

According to Wang Yingjian, an official of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform, Beijing will build five industry clusters featuring innovative green technologies in Beijing's Zhongguancun, Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, Huairou Science City, and Pinggu district.

In addition, Beijing will build four environmentally friendly demonstration zones in areas where the venues of the 2022 Winter Olympic are located, Beijing's sub-center, Beijing Daxing International Airport, and Beijing's Huitian area. These demonstration zones will focus on sustainable development, green urbanization, building green and low-carbon airport, and eco-friendly community, respectively.

According to the plan, residents in the Huitian eco-friendly community will enjoy a variety of environmentally friendly technologies and products, such as smart parking system, smart garbage sorting bins, and energy-saving decoration materials and home appliances.

The plan also highlights the leading role of companies in green technology innovation. To tap the potential of companies in developing green technologies, Beijing will support the building and organization of incubators through a market-oriented approach, and set up a platform to ease financial difficulties for companies to develop green technologies. The city is also encouraging companies to take part in the projects of energy saving and air pollution control in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and other neighboring regions.
