Beijing's color-coded QR system for coronavirus tracking, a mobile app called the "Beijing Health Kit," has added an e-registration feature to make documentations easier for visitors entering establishments in the city and for keeping track of their health status.

According to a press briefing Thursday, visitors of public locations, such as office buildings, restaurants, and shopping malls, can now scan a QR code presented at each checkpoint to automatically enter their basic information and health status without manually registering at each location.

In accordance with Beijing's current COVID-19 prevention and control measures, visitors of some public facilities and office buildings are required to show their health code and register at checkpoints before entry.

A green code shows that the person is not under quarantine and can move around the city freely, but those with yellow and red codes need to quarantine themselves at home or undergo supervised quarantine, respectively.

A person's quarantine status is based on factors like travel history, and duration of time spent in an outbreak-stricken area.

If the visitor's health code shows abnormal condition, the "health kit" app would send an alert, making security at checkpoints easier for managing entry.

The new e-registration feature will increase efficiency and avoid long queues or crowds at each checkpoint, so as to reduce risk of infections, said Pan Feng, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology.

To protect people's privacy, only the person's surname and the first and last two digits of his or her ID number would be displayed at the system after each registration, and all information would be documented at a data center only for coronavirus tracking purposes, according to the briefing.

People who cover up or falsify their health status will be held accountable in accordance with relevant laws and regulations on epidemic prevention.

Since the QR system was rolled out in March 1, 29 million people have used the system 360 million times.
