As of June 22, Luohu has taken 350,000 throat swab samples for nucleic acid testing of the novel coronavirus, which accounts for 11 percent of the total of Shenzhen, ranked the 1st among all districts in the city, according to Zhang Xiuming, deputy president of the Luohu Hospital Group and director of the group's medical testing center, in the biweekly news conference held by the district government, especially for the Luohu public health bureau, on June 24.

The center has been playing an indispensable role in fighting against the virus since its outbreak in Shenzhen. The center was prepared for testing on Jan 23, finished its trial testing on Jan 24, received the testing qualification from the Shenzhen public health commission on Jan 28, and started testing on Jan 29, becoming one of the first batches of labs conducting the testing.

The center organized five work teams in charge of sample taking and transportation, sterilization, logistics, statistics, and sample testing respectively. They cooperate seamlessly with each other. Its daily testing capacity is 9,529.

The center also helps other districts, including Longgang, Futian, Pingshan, Baoan, and Nanshan, to conduct their testing.

The Luohu authorities pay special attention to helping upgrade and improve the center's testing capacity and efficiency during the pandemic, providing the center with all the assistance it needs.

The center has 122 employees, aged 35 on average, and more than 90 percent of them have bachelor degrees and above. Its lab covers an area of 9,000 square meters; it is a comprehensive large-scale modern lab.

According to Zhang, the group founded its medical testing center on the basis of the testing departments of five hospitals and 23 community-level rehabilitation centers in August 2015, which gives it the capacity to conduct so many sample tests at present.

In April 2019, the center received its medical practice license from the Shenzhen public health commission and thus can act independently as a medical test lab.

In October 2019, the lab obtained recognition from the ISO15189 system, an international standard of a medical lab's quality and ability. This means its test reports can be recognized by other peers around the globe.

On June 19, 2020, the medical testing center passed the evaluation by the Shenzhen public health commission and became a key lab of the city.
