China's education authority has ordered schools nationwide to intensify efforts to prevent students from drowning during the summer.

The order was issued by the office of the education supervision commission of the State Council, following recent student drowning incidents.

Schools should promote safety education concerning drowning among students and their parents in order to improve students' awareness of self-protection, as well as their guardians' sense of responsibility, said the office.

Swimming lessons need to be offered to help students master swimming and some basic related self-protection skills to avoid drowning, it added.

The office also urged relevant departments to carry out thorough inspections to eliminate potential safety hazards in the water and set up protective facilities in water bodies nationwide.
