During the city's regular press conference on July 14, Li Yi, a spokesperson for the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, said that the new semester for primary and secondary schools and secondary vocational schools will start on Sept. 1 as planned.
Li stressed that the city considers the life and health of teachers and students as its top priority, and will make dynamic adjustments according to the demands of normalized epidemic prevention and control work, adopting measures such as staggering the opening days of schools to avoid large gatherings of students.
In addition, the commission clearly stated in a notice that it may adjust the school calendar according to relevant regulations in the event of special circumstances, and will announce any changes upon approval. In addition, after the start of the new semester, online courses will be provided alongside offline classes to a reasonable degree.
Li added that schools are not permitted to organize online or offline training courses during the summer vacation. The Beijing Municipal Education Commission formulated a municipal-level summer vacation practice activity manual, which outlines standards for the total amount of homework each school may set during the summer holiday.
