The 2020 Beijing-Hangzhou Dialogue on the Grand Canal kicked off on Wednesday in Beijing, bringing together experts from home and abroad to shed light on narrative strategies to better develop a cultural belt along the canal.

Jointly hosted by the Information Office of Beijing Municipal People’s Government, the Information Office of Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government, Hangzhou Municipal People’s Government and China News Service, this year is the second time that the event is been held.

This year’s event consists of talks and several themed exhibitions that showcase distinctive regional characteristics found along the canal in reference to ancient works of Chinese literature and art as well as modern photography.

A series of framework agreements were signed between local authorities of the two cities and other attendees during the opening ceremony on Sept. 23. The agreements address issues relating to a new five-party cooperative mechanism and means to foster high-quality tourism and cultural industries.

During the opening ceremony, the four hosts, together with World Historic and Cultural Canal Cities Cooperation Organization (WCCO), launched an appeal to the audiences which calls for a wider public participation to inheriting the cultural heritages of the Grand Canal. The Bank of Beijing and its counterpart of Hangzhou also released the canal-culture-themed financial products.

In addition to dialogues between the two cities, there are also a series of shows staged for the audience to take in the rich history of the two cities. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was inscribed to the World Heritage List in 2014.
