Beijing's sub-center will finish building its barrier-free facilities on sidewalks and in communities, government service halls, parks, scenic areas, and areas for seniors and people with disabilities by the end of this year.

The work includes 17 constructing tasks such as building ramps and handrails by stairs and setting up courtesy seats in government service halls.

The tasks are now underway in accordance with the action plan issued at the end of last year, the first of its kind in Beijing.

So far, the three-step stairs of the public toilet in Grand Canal Forest Park have been changed into a concrete ramp with stainless steel handrails for a universal access. Long benches have also been set up in bus station booths in the sub-center.

A disabled person in Hongqi Community said that he found it very convenient to go up and down stairs after the government paid to install stainless steel handrails in the residential buildings there.

An official in charge of the building tasks explained that the barrier-free facilities are not only for people with disabilities, but also for people with mobility difficulties in its neighborhood, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and children.

At present, the municipality's sub-center has 7,031 locations to be renovated, which will involve 38 government departments, companies, and organizations.
