The number of medical institutions in China surpassed one million in 2019, including 34,000 hospitals, Guo Yanhong, an official with the National Health Commission said on Friday.

Medical institutions saw about 8.7 billion medical visits across the country, Guo said at a press conference in Beijing. She added that the quality and safety of medical services had continued to improve.

Over the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015) and the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), nearly 7.5 billion yuan (about 1.1 billion U.S. dollars) of the country's fiscal expenditure have supported over 1,500 projects of building key clinical specialties nationwide, Guo said.

National medical centers and regional health centers were also established to enrich high-quality medical resources, Guo added.
