The Intermediate People's Court of Guangzhou in south China's Guangdong Province on Thursday sentenced Zhang Qi, a former senior official from south China's Hainan Province, to life in prison for accepting bribes.

Zhang, a former member of the Standing Committee of the Hainan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and former secretary of the CPC Haikou municipal committee, was ordered by the court to have all his personal property confiscated and turn over all illicit gains, including any interest earned on them, to the state treasury.

Zhang accepted the court's decision and said he will not appeal the verdict.

He was found to have illegally accepted money and gifts amounting to over 107 million yuan (16.3 million U.S. dollars) while holding various Party and government positions between 2005 and 2019, abusing his positions to help organizations and individuals in areas such as land development and project contracting.

The court said Zhang was given a lenient punishment as he had confessed, provided additional information about his crimes and showed repentance, and all his illicit gains had been recovered.
