China will build more than 600,000 5G base stations in 2021, according to a press conference held by the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in January.

At the press conference, chief engineer and spokesperson of the MIIT Tian Yulong introduced China's industry and information technology development in 2020.

According to Tian, China's total telecommunication services registered a year-on-year growth of 20.6% in 2020, and the revenue of software and information services rose 13.3% over the previous year.

"More than 600,000 5G base stations were built and put into operation last year, and the number of 5G terminal connections exceeded 200 million, covering all cities above the prefecture level," Tian said.

China also deepened efforts to implement the strategy of industrial internet innovation and development. Notable progress was made in combating the infringement of users' rights and interests, telecom and online fraud, as well as unauthorized illegal broadcasting, Tian added.

China's 5G network progress proved its worth in 2020, with more than 1,100 5G+ industrial internet projects.

According to Zhao Zhiguo, director of the Information and Communication Bureau of the MIIT, many industries are seizing the great opportunities brought about by the commercialization of 5G to speed up the process of industrial digitization. New models and forms facilitated by 5G are also emerging, such as 5G+ autonomous driving, 5G+ smart grids, and 5G+ online education, Zhao added.

In 2021, the MIIT will continue to promote 5G's application in different scenarios to boost the development of various industries, stressed Zhao.

The first is to help improve the country's network coverage. China will build another 600,000 5G base stations in 2021, which will greatly expand 5G coverage in counties and towns. Local governments will also be guided to provide more support to the construction of the 5G network.

The second is to advance innovation in 5G applications. New 5G-enabled consumption models, such as 5G plus VR/AR and immersive gaming will be nurtured, and 5G-enabled life services like health, elderly care and housekeeping are to be promoted.

The third is to upgrade the 5G's industrial base and make advance plans and systematic arrangements for 5G's future development. China will, in accordance with the introduction process of 5G international standards including R17 and R18, expedite R&D and the deployment of key technologies. This includes network slicing, edge computing and 5G enhancement, as well as key products and devices, such as customized and economical 5G chips, modules and terminals.

In addition, more efforts will be made to secure breakthroughs in reinforcing industrial weak links and to ensure the safety of industrial and supply chains. 5G millimeter wave tests will also be continued.
