Beijing's air quality ranked eighth among 168 key cities in China in January, according to an announcement from the Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau on Feb. 25.
The average concentration of PM2.5 in Beijing was 38 micrograms per cubic meter last month, the cleanest among 28 cities within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and surrounding areas.
PM2.5, airborne particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, pose a significant health risk.
On Jan. 28, the municipal government's executive meeting reviewed and approved an action plan for deepening pollution prevention and control, requiring the capital to consolidate achievements made so far and to continue to improve air quality.
Beijing reported a 53% decrease in PM2.5 density during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020) after a spate of measures were taken to tackle air pollution, including the closures of small polluting factories and an increased use of clean energy.
The average concentration of PM2.5 in the metropolis was 38 micrograms per cubic meter in 2020, marking a year-on-year decline of 9.5 percent and the lowest reading since data was first collected in 2013.
