Beijing is optimizing health screening procedures at public places, such as hospitals, supermarkets, parks and transportation hubs, allowing citizens without smartphones or health QR codes to enter with their ID cards or other such documents, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology announced on Thursday.

Since last December, the Chinese capital has piloted a program to allow the elderly to enter public places with their senior citizen cards. So far, terminal devices for verifying health code by scanning ID cards, senior citizen cards, and social security cards have been set up in over 170 public places including the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Yuyuantan Park, and Shuntianfu supermarket, receiving over 400,000 enquiries.

Beijing also plans to add disability ID card to the health screening system in more public places. According to a person in charge at the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, scanning a card is more convenient and in line with people's habits, especially in heavily populated public places such as airports, train stations and factories. Currently, Beijing is working on expanding the pilot program to more areas. Such card-scanning devices are expected to be set up at the Beijing Daxing International Airport and the Beijing Capital International Airport this year.

In addition, the city is actively promoting the universal recognition of health code nationwide. After integrating into relevant national platforms, health codes will be accepted by all regional authorities, so as to provide greater convenience for travelers. Passengers who have previously registered for the health code can enter train stations and airports in Beijing by scanning their ID cards. And for passengers who have not previously registered, their registration and verification of health codes will be processed through the relevant national platforms.
