Beijing's Haidian district recently issued an action plan to protect and utilize cultural relics of the Three Mountains and Five Gardens, which refer to the mountains, imperial palaces and gardens in Beijing's northwestern suburb.

According to the plan, nine major tasks will be carried out to restore the traditional landscape of the area from this April to June 2023.

The protection of the area includes the following: a variety of cultural relics, overall landscape of rivers and mountains, and its connection between Beijing's old city areas.

Haidian will thoroughly survey the cultural relic resources in the district and evaluate them regularly. A data center will be established to include all the information pertinent to the cultural heritage resources regarding the Three Mountains and Five Gardens, such as immovable cultural relics, ancient trees and trees of precious species, and projects of intangible cultural heritage.

Modern information technologies such as big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence will be utilized in protecting cultural relics. The plan also calls for accelerating the construction and application of digital infrastructure, and the development of cultural and creativity industries.

Haidian also plans to build the Museum of Old Summer Palace (also known as "Yuanmingyuan"), and a cultural relic restoration center, as part of the efforts to bring more relics to their original palace home. And a museum cluster that includes university museums, the Yuanmingyuan Museum, the Summer Palace Museum, and the Haidian Museum is expected to be created in the future.

In addition, public participation is encouraged in the protection, research, and exhibition of the cultural relics.
