Beijing recently issued a plan to increase the proportion of nursing beds in elderly care homes to at least 50% by 2022.

The plan was jointly released by the Municipal Health Commission, the Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau, and other government departments, aiming to advance the integrated development of medical and nursing services.

The Chinese capital also plans to increase resources in medical and nursing services as a whole, and encourage large and medium nursing homes to add medical functions. Nursing and medical institutions should be built in close proximity to each other, according to the plan.

In addition, at-home elderly care services will be improved. Medical workers in hospitals are encouraged to participate in family doctor service teams. Primary-level medical institutes will provide at-home medical care and nursing services for people aged 65 and above.

Beijing will support the development of 10 vocational schools, with a special focus on majors like rehabilitation, nursing, community workers, and elderly care services. The city plans to train at least 10,000 elderly nursing professionals, 500 managers of elderly care institutions, and 500 elderly care community workers per year through 2022. Furthermore, medical resources will be shared and better coordinated in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
