The Innovative Capacity Committee, an affiliate of the non-profit academic organization Innovation Method Society, was established in Beijing on May 30.

More than 70 academics, experts, and entrepreneurs from universities, scientific research institutes, and enterprises attended the inaugural meeting.

The Innovative Capacity Committee will build a platform for research, discussion, and cooperation around the cultivation of innovative thinking among children and adolescents, carry out theoretical research on innovative education, and accelerate reform and innovation around teaching content and pedagogical methods, according to Gong Huili, head of the Innovative Capacity Committee and former president of Capital Normal University.

Innovation is the driving force for development, said Huang Shengbiao, deputy director of the Department of Research Commercialization and Regional Innovation of the Ministry of Science and Technology, noting that innovation plays a crucial role in China’s national development strategy.

Huang added that the committee looks to provide strong theoretical and practical support for the development of China’s innovation capacity through in-depth research on innovation methods and innovative education.

Meng Fanhua, president of Capital Normal University, the supporting institution behind the committee, said that the establishment of the committee could not have been better timed.

“The 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035 emphasizes that ‘innovation remains at the heart of China’s modernization drive,’” Meng said. “To become a global leader in innovation, the country needs to foster creative talents.”

Liu Yanhua, head of the Innovation Method Society, pointed out that China is relatively strong at knowledge-intensive education, but in some innovation-driven countries, ability- or competency-based education plays a bigger part in their education system.

Liu encouraged the committee to launch diversified courses for capacity building based on specific needs and to develop a set of teaching materials that focus on innovation ability.

Innovation Method Society is a non-profit academic organization supervised by the Ministry of Science and Technology. It is mainly engaged in undertaking strategic research, conducting training, convening high-level forums, and promoting international cooperation for the application of innovative methods.
