The west extension of the Beijing Capital Airport Express Line, connecting the existing Dongzhimen and Beixinqiao metro stations, is scheduled to open by the end of this year, according to official plans.

Spanning 1.83 kilometers, the project is the shortest Beijing rail transit project currently under construction.

According to Beijing Construction Engineering Group, the project's contractor, construction of the main structure of the underground tunnel was completed on Wednesday. The building of the tunnel took a total of 1,852 days since its commencement on May 28, 2016.

"Though the tunnel was not long, we encountered many difficulties during construction," said Xin Liang, an engineer for the project. Xin noted that there are many high-risk sections along the route that require the utmost precision.

The project is also the most mechanically-intensive portion among all current subway lines under construction in Beijing, said Zhang Dong, the project manager.

According to the plan, the track-laying process and renovation of stations will start soon now that the main structure is built.

The project is expected to relieve the passenger flow pressure at Dongzhimen Station and improve the overall operational capability of the Beijing Capital Airport Express.
