Sun Ok Kyung, a citizen of the Republic of Korea, has been rescued after being stranded at home for more than 24 hours by floodwaters in central China's Henan Province.

Sun, a professor at Henan Normal University in the city of Xinxiang, had been trapped in her residential neighborhood after torrential rainfall flooded the area since early Thursday morning.

Rescuers reached Sun's home by raft on Friday afternoon and transported her and other stranded residents to a temporary accommodation site at a local school.

"My colleagues at the university have called me and told me they will send me some daily necessities. I was very touched," 42-year-old Sun said after arriving at the school.

Recollecting the dark hours of being trapped at home and facing power outages, she said that her neighbor, a Chinese woman in her 60s, gave her constant encouragement and helped her through the predicament.

"We chatted, shared food and exchanged news about the floods," she said. "My neighbor told me not to be afraid because the government will surely come to our rescue."

Heavy rainfall that started last Friday and the associated floods have so far affected more than 7.5 million people across Henan Province, leaving 56 people dead and five missing as of Friday night, according to the provincial emergency management department.
