The construction of the China University of Rehabilitation Sciences in Qingdao, Shandong province, is right on schedule. Most of the buildings, which cover an overall area of 530,000 square meters, have their roofs topped out already, and the whole project is likely to be concluded by the end of this year, according to Zhang Haidi, president of Rehabilitation International (RI) and chairperson of the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF).

During a news conference in Beijing on Jul. 29, Zhang said that the central authorities have paid close attention to the university project, which has entered the 13th and the 14th five-year plans (2016-2025).

The CDPF proposed the university project in 2015, hoping to establish an official base for rehabilitation professionals, such as specialized doctors and assistive devices engineers. It's a necessary initiative to meet the demands of the country's population with disabilities, which includes 44 million aged people with disabilities.

The university was founded in 2019 and is the first of its kind in the world. Although its undergraduate program is not yet opened, over the past two years the university has admitted 46 postgraduates to its doctorate program.

Zhang said there's still a lot to be done to ensure that the university can realize all of its goals.
