An Olympic-themed winter sports festival kicked off at Beijing's Summer Palace on Jan. 10, a few weeks before the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics officially gets underway.

Considered to be the largest natural ice rink in Beijing, the Summer Palace ice rink that's open to the public this year is about 300,000 square meters.

To echo the theme of "Welcome Beijing 2022," the ice rink is decorated with Winter Olympics mascots and slogans. In addition to the winter sports activities, there is also a Winter Olympic-themed exhibition. Visitors can enjoy the ancient palatial man-made garden while riding ice bicycles.

The ice rink is divided into two areas. One is for single carts, double carts, ice bicycles and speed skating, while the other is reserved for electric carts, electric ice bumper cars and electric dragon boats.

Every day, a safety officer inspects the ice thickness at six measuring points when the ice rink opens at 8 a.m., and then again at 2 p.m. when daytime temperatures are at their highest. When the ice rink is closed at night, it is cleaned and maintained.

Since 2014, ice and snow activities staged at Beijing municipal parks have drawn in nearly 2 million people.
