China's procuratorates have probed punitive damages claims in public interest lawsuits involving food and drug safety violations, said the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) Monday.

Procuratorates nationwide handled around 30,000 public interest litigation cases involving food and drug safety violations in 2021, showed statistics by the SPP.

According to the SPP, implementing punitive damages claims for food and drug safety violations would raise the cost of these violations. It also warns those tending to commit illegal acts.
