E-mail China.org.cn, March 8, 2022With a series of public welfare activities and targeted services to be launched this year, Shichahai Street of Beijing's Xicheng district will step up efforts to improve accessibility for people with disabilities and develop a community-level sphere that ensures them to receive help within 15 minutes.
According to the plan, a total of 100 events are set to kick off in the area to offer assistance to people with disabilities. Specially, efforts will be made to create a favorable social environment that promotes equality, participation, and sharing, and to develop volunteering projects accordingly. Cultural activities and career fairs will also be held to explore job opportunities for people with disabilities.
Based on these events, Shichahai Street will further work on three projects which focus on the needs of the vulnerable group and provide targeted services. For example, a project facing children with disabilities and their families will continue to offer services such as mental health counseling, art therapy, and lectures on rehabilitation exercises at home. The project will also incorporate education and career resources this year to support families of children with disabilities.
Another project will be launched to provide more accompaniment for people with disabilities. They will be invited to join in group support activities, and volunteers will be sent to accompany those unwilling to be outdoors and help them with their daily needs.
In addition, a video project will kick off where local government officials, volunteers, and people with disabilities will be on camera to share their stories, in a bid encourage more people to provide assistance and create a caring and respectful social environment in the area. Shichahai Street will also establish a pair-up assistance mechanism to offer 500 people with disabilities individualized support.
According to a local official, Shichahai Street will proactively engage people with disabilities in social activities and help them to achieve self-fulfillment via more social participation.
