The Wenjindu Port in Luohu started implementing a zero-contact connection for trucks shuttling between Hong Kong and the mainland on March 14.

According to the latest arrangement, after clearing customs, drivers from Hong Kong will drive to a designated area in the port where staff disinfect their trucks and cargo before passing the latter on to receivers in Shenzhen, and vice versa.

All truck drivers, loaders, and staff working in the port are managed under epidemic prevention and control closed-loop.

This zero-contact connection mode has proven a win-win arrangement for both Hong Kong and Shenzhen. On the one hand, it provides a reliable channel for the special administrative region to obtain 90% of its fresh food on a daily basis despite the raging COVID-19 pandemic; on the other, Shenzhen can effectively prevent the spillover effects of the epidemic in Hong Kong.

More than 85% of Hong Kong’s fresh food is transported through the Wenjindu Port. The port started transforming its facilities for the zero-contact connection mode on Feb. 14, and the transformation project took about seven days to complete.
