Major supermarkets in Beijing have bolstered their stock of goods and strengthened logistics capacities to ensure the capital city’s stable supply of daily necessities.

Foods including vegetables, meat, poultry, and eggs can be found aplenty at a Wumart supermarket in Dongcheng district. The number of shoppers increased in the afternoon and returned to normal in the evening.

Wumart released a notice on Thursday that all its Beijing’s stores would extend opening hours from May 12 to 14. The stores will also beef up food supply and increase logistics capabilities as well as ensure that online orders are properly delivered.

A person in charge of Carrefour said that stocks of basic necessities including rice, flour, oil, vegetables, fruits, meat, poultry, eggs, and anti-pandemic materials have been doubled or tripled from the normal amount, so as to ensure ample market supply and stable prices. The supermarket has also provided online ordering services in local communities, and consumers can place orders on a WeChat mini app.

E-commerce platforms have increased their stocks between three to five times their normal amount as well, especially the amount of vegetables, meat, poultry, and eggs. They have also brought in staff from other areas to help sort goods and make deliveries.
