The opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Great Wall Cultural Festival will be held in Gubei Water Town in the capital's Miyun District on Aug. 20.

The opening ceremony will be divided into three sections to display the cultural connotation of the Great Wall and highlight the development achievements of the protection and utilization of the ancient wonder.

The Miyun Section of the Great Wall is 182.97 kilometers long. Simatai Great Wall in Miyun District links Jinshanling in the north and Gubeikou in the west, right next to Gubei Water Town. It served as a vital military defensive base during ancient time and is impressive for its breathtaking scenery, especially at night. Simatai is the only ancient architectural site in China that retains the original form of the Ming Dynasty-era wall. It was designated as the "Primitive Great Wall" by UNESCO.

Beijing plans to comprehensively protect and develop the Great Wall Cultural Belt, which comprises a total area of 4,929.29 square kilometers, including the implementation of both heritage protection and ecological conservation measures. Considerable achievements toward these goals have been made in recent years.

The opening ceremony will also showcase achievements in Great Wall protection, release national-level scenic roads along the Great Wall, and award role models for the protection of cultural relics in Beijing.

The festival is hosted by the Publicity Department of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and co-sponsored by the Beijing Municipal Cultural Heritage Bureau, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, and the Miyun District People's Government of Beijing Municipality.
