Beijing has built a safe, convenient, efficient, and green rail transit system in the past 10 years, with its total length reaching 1,148 kilometers, according to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport.

The Chinese capital has expanded its urban rail transit line from 442 kilometers to 783 kilometers over the past decade, the transport commission said. The city now has 27 urban rail transit lines and 463 stations, compared to 16 lines and 261 stations in 2012. Beijing's suburban rail transit network totals 365 kilometers, with the number of rail transit lines increasing from one to four since 2012.

With the rapid development of the rail transit network, more citizens in Beijing are choosing to commute by metro. The city's daily passenger volume increased from 6.72 million trips in 2012 to 13 million trips in 2019, with the proportion of rail trips in Beijing's public transport sector growing from 32.3% to 57.4% in 2019. The metro has become the most convenient way for citizens to commute in the city, greatly relieving its road congestion.

Beijing has also rolled out a series of measures to make rail transit services more convenient and safe. For example, trains on 10 metro line are running at a minimum interval of 2 minutes from 3 to 4 minutes previously.

The city's rail transit stations have been equipped with baby care rooms, automated external defibrillator (AED) devices, convenience stores, among other facilities, providing a variety of services to passengers.

In addition, local subway commuters can now pay fares through Alipay, WeChat, UnionPay, and other mobile payment platforms, saving time for passengers. Thanks to the integrated development of transportation, residents in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, and Hohhot now can use mobile apps to take subways in all these cities, without the need to download new ones in a different city.
