Beijing has once again become the top science city globally, followed by the New York metropolitan area, according to the Nature Index global science city 2022 rankings released recently.

In terms of the building of science centers and innovation hubs, Beijing has become one of the leading innovative cities in the world, according to Xu Qiang, an official of the municipal science and technology commission.

The index shows that Beijing leads the world in high-quality scientific research output in physics and chemistry.

With three national laboratories put into use and a cluster of scientific installations launched in Huairou Science City, Beijing has yielded a batch of world-class innovative products in the fields of quantum information, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and life and health.

Industrial clusters have become a driving force for promoting the high-quality development of cutting-edge technologies in Beijing.

The new generation of information technology has formed a trillion-yuan industrial cluster in the capital city. The scale of industrial clusters in medicine, health, artificial intelligence, intelligent equipment, energy conservation, and environmental protection has reached 100 billion yuan each.

Thanks to the strong industrial cluster effects generated by Zhongguancun Science Park, a company like Agile Robots has grown from a small enterprise with only 10 employees and millions in revenues from its main business to a unicorn enterprise with an estimated value of more than $1.5 billion, annual sales revenue of nearly 200 million yuan, and more than 900 employees worldwide over the past three years.

In addition, Beijing's turnover of certified and registered technology contracts exceeded 700 billion yuan in 2021, cementing Beijing's position as China's largest intercity research cooperation center.

According to the statistics, the city has a wealth of talent, including science strategists, top industrial leaders, and young scientists. The number of active researchers in Beijing exceeds 470,000, ranking first in the world.
