Beijing intensified efforts to build an efficient, eco-friendly and reliable modern infrastructure system in 2022, increasing subway mileage, improving public services, and expanding green space in urban parks.

To advance the coordinated development of the Beijing-Hebei-Tianjin region, the public transport network saw further improvements last year. The driving time between Beijing and Xiong'an New Area was reduced to 50 minutes, half an hour less than in the past. An intercity railway between Beijing and Hebei's Tangshan was opened, and urban rail construction around Beijing was also accelerated.

In addition, Metro Line 16 in Beijing opened to the public at the end of last year. The total length of operational subway lines in Beijing is expected to reach 800 kilometers, with the southern extension of Beijing Subway's Changping Line set to begin trial operations. The city also plans to extend more subway lines and open new metro stations to promote green transportation.

Supporting facilities around Beijing's Huairou Science City and IT industry parks also saw improvement in 2022, which helped facilitate the construction of the city's global sci-tech innovation hub.

Beijing also accelerated the development of its "two zones" by speeding up road construction around the Biomedical Industry Base in Daxing district and building a comprehensive service area in the reclaimed Shougang Steel Plant. An integrated traffic management project in the Wangjing subdistrict of Beijing's Chaoyang district also started construction in 2022, offering people more smart transportation choices.

A total of 31,000 government-subsidized rental housing units were also built in the city's central plain region last year.

According to the city's development and reform commission, Beijing will further ramp up infrastructure construction in key areas such as its sub-center in Tongzhou district and Huairou Science City.

In order to improve its urban environment, the city has built a total of 740 kilometers of pipelines for sewage and another 101 kilometers for recycled water over the past few years, resulting in a sewage treatment capacity of 500,000 cubic meters per day. Additionally, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project has successfully transferred more than 8 billion cubic meters of water to the city.

Green space per capita in urban parks has also greatly improved, reaching 16.63 square meters in 2022.
