The Corridor of the People's South Area, or Renminnan, of Luohu district recently won a 2023 Urban Design Architecture Design (UDAD) Award for its environmental quality improvement planning.

The Urban Planning & Design Institute of Shenzhen, Doffice (Shenzhen), and Han Du Associates are the major masterminds behind the planning.

During the past 40 years, Shenzhen has become an international metropolis from scratch. An introduction describing the project outlines how Shenzhen originated in Luohu district, demonstrating how the district has inherited well-preserved traditional folk culture, which co-exists with modern services and precious natural assets.

As a densely built district, the growth of the city has seen these assets, whether natural, historical, or cultural, scatter into archipelagos. Some people therefore have poor access to open spaces, and green spaces are unable to infiltrate into the city since they are blocked by urban developments, according to the introduction provided by Luohu.

The corridor is trying to resolve these problems. The project covers an area of 90 hectares, which involves major parks, metro hubs, cultural facilities, shopping malls, urban renewal sites, communities, and so on. The mission is to perform a planning study on a pedestrian and bike corridor route, which is expected to work as a lively, artistically inviting, and ecologically friendly public space with specific design facets. The designers believe that if this project is likened to a catalyst for Luohu’s development future, it is a great opportunity for the district to achieve improved public services in the long term.

The project is just one part of the district's efforts to upgrade the area into a modern commerce zone.
