Beijing has released environmental data using a new index to help people anticipate their outdoor experience at the city's parks and forests.

The index is based on hydrologic, soil, meteorological, biological, and environmental data of areas within 2 to 10 kilometers of 12 monitoring stations, including the temperature, wind speed, humidity, PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations, and negative oxygen ion concentration.

The numbers fluctuate between 0 and 1 and include four levels. A reading closer to 1 indicates a better outdoor experience. When there is a red alert for meteorological disasters, or when any of the environmental factors reaches extreme levels, the index number would be 0.

The index currently covers 12 typical ecosystems in Beijing's 10 districts, including seven woodlands, two urban greenspaces, and three wetlands.

People can find numbers for the next three days on the website, WeChat official account, and Weibo of the municipal forestry and parks bureau as well as the WeChat official account and Weibo of the municipal meteorological authority.
