The Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress has initiated an enforcement inspection of the regulation to safeguard cultural heritage sites along the city's historical Central Axis.
Starting in late March, the inspection team will conduct field investigations to assess the preservation of cultural relics along the Central Axis, its historical urban layout, street designs, and the inheritance and utilization of related intangible cultural heritages.
The team also plans to hold symposiums with relevant government bodies, grassroots workers, experts and legislators to comprehensively understand the protection efforts in place.
The inspection work will focus on establishing and operating a system concerning Central Axis conservation and management, implementing specific preservation measures, heritage inheritance and utilization, public engagement, and allocating related funds.
Upon competition, the inspection report will be presented to the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress for review and approval.
Enacted on Oct. 1, 2022, the regulation represents a critical step in Beijing Central Axis's bid for World Heritage Status by 2035.
Beijing has completed the restoration of several key heritage sites stretching along the Central Axis, such as the Drum Tower, Wanning Bridge, and the archers' tower at Zhengyangmen Gate.
Local cultural relics authorities have stated that the city will soon roll out various projects to establish additional cultural heritage preservation areas, regulate urban development, optimize urban design, and incorporate more natural elements into related historical sites.
