The 2022 Energy and Environment Youth Talent Training Program, jointly sponsored by the China Environmental Protection Foundation, the China Energy Society and the Beijing Energy and Environment Society, has recently concluded with full success.

During the 6-month program, a total of eight academicians and 16 experts shared their knowledge with the trainees through open courses, small-class courses and group discussions, with the total course length reaching nearly 200 hours.

The program was to leverage the new generation of information technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things and blockchain in energy technology innovation, enrich the supply of different types of energy, and realize green, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy supply, promoting the development of talent in the environmental and energy industries in China.

The project followed closely the development trend of energy and environment in the world, covering seven key areas, such as advanced energy storage technology, efficient solar energy utilization technology, green mine, clean and efficient utilization technology of coal, energy saving and energy efficiency improvement technology, oil and gas exploration and development technology, hydrogen energy and fuel cell technology.

The courses of each field were delivered by at least one academician and two industry experts. Among the speakers were also senior policy experts from the Ministry of Natural Resources, as well as technical leaders from institutes and enterprises such as Sinopec Petroleum Exploration and Production Research Institute and Shanghai Waigaoqiao No. 3 Power Generation Co., LTD.

The trainees and the speakers formed together an academic closed loop through the system of production, learning, research and application through systematic learning and communication in the program.

The first batch of 81 trainees came from universities, enterprises, policy-making departments and judicial and legal organs and other fields across the country. They said the program provided them with strong academic support for their future career development.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, China's ecological civilization construction is expected to enter a crucial period with carbon reduction as the key strategic direction. The country needs to further promote the synergistic effect of carbon reduction and pollution reduction, boost the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development, and realize substantial improvements of ecological environment.

Along with the clean energy transformation, China also needs to maintain economic development and manufacturing progress, which requires the support of a large number of energy and environmental talents. In this energy revolution, the young talents in the relevant fields shoulder important responsibilities.

By virtue of industry courses and academic exchanges, the program aimed to expand the country's talent pool in energy and environment.

Han Buxing, chair of Beijing Society of Energy and Environment and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, pointed out that the research of energy and environment has entered a new stage, which require the young talents to continuously acquire new knowledge and improve the level of production and management with high scientific and technological literacy.

Han noted that the training of young talents is an important starting point for the implementation of the strategy of "rejuvenating the country by talents", and it is also an inevitable requirement for the development of modern industry.

Jin Yong, a professor of chemical engineering at Tsinghua University and an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, who was also speaker in the program, spoke highly of the program, saying that it forms a platform for exchanges and brainstorms.

Jin also stressed: "The path of scientific research is filled with twists and turns and many hardships. Young science workers and scientists must rise to the challenge, and take up the baton of building China into a country strong in energy and resources, making greater contributions to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation."
