Beijing's sci-fi industry has seen robust growth in recent years, with its output value now accounting for one-third of the national total, thanks to policy and financial support as well as collaboration between the government and private sectors.

In 2020, the Beijing Municipal Government and the China Association for Science and Technology signed a strategic cooperation agreement that led to a rapid growth for the city's sci-fi industry. Under the city's 14th Five-Year Plan for sci-tech innovation, the sci-fi and virtual reality industries were placed as a major focus for the highly advanced industries in Shijingshan district.

To support the industry's growth, the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and the Administrative Commission of Zhongguancun Science Park have launched initiatives to support key projects in technology research and development, platform services, and cluster development, with a total investment of about 400 million yuan (US$58 million) from both municipal and district-level governments and private capital.

Furthermore, the Zhongguancun Sci-Fi Industry Innovation Center was established to incubate and accelerate core technology for the sci-fi industry, with 55 companies already registered with the center and 30 companies having opened offices there.

Beijing also hosted the China Sci-Fi Convention, the Sci-Fi Industry Carnival, the Sci-Fi Film Week, as well as exhibitions and themed forums related to new technologies and products related to the sci-fi industry to foster a pro-development environment for the sector.

Looking forward, Beijing vows to continue promoting the integration of key technology research and development with targeted scenario applications to ensure the sustained and healthy development of the scientific and technological innovation industries in the city, specifically in areas such as the metaverse, cellular and gene therapy, and robots.
