With a total of 215 museums completing registration procedures at the Beijing Municipal Cultural Heritage Bureau and 202 currently in operation as of the end of 2022, Beijing is now home to the largest number of museums in China, according to a blue paper published Thursday on International Museum Day.

The blue paper reviewed the development of Beijing's museum industry over the past two years, and put forward suggestions on strengthening the supply of cultural products and improving the appeal of museums and cultural venues.

According to the document, Beijing experienced its fastest period of museum construction from 2021 to 2022 with 18 new museums registering in the city. Large-scale museums such as the Museum of the Communist Party of China and the National Museum of Classic Books also opened in Beijing in the past two years, offering another boost to the city’s initiative of building itself into a “City of Museums.”

Since 2021, local cultural authorities have been optimizing the urban layout of museums and supporting districts to establish themed museums and create public cultural spaces that utilize historical buildings and industrial heritage.

In addition to improvements to existing museum facilities, new construction projects are also in full swing. For example, the Grand Canal Museum on the ancient site of Luxian county in Tongzhou district is nearing completion with the venue scheduled to open to the public next year.
