After two years of construction, the East Sixth Ring Road Tunnel in Beijing was successfully dug through on Wednesday. The tunnel is 7.4 kilometers long, making it the longest shielded highway tunnel in China.
This achievement was made possible after overcoming a myriad of challenges such as an ultra-large diameter, ultra-long distance, ultra-deep soil cover, and ultra-sensitive environment, said its constructor, China Railway 14th Bureau Group Co., Ltd.
The next step is to complete the remaining concrete structure in the tunnel, followed by furnishing and electromechanical installation. Once the tunnel is fully complete, it will help to improve traffic flow in the area and make it easier for people to get around.
The East Sixth Ring Road is a major transportation artery in Beijing. The renovation project, which includes the tunnel, spans approximately 16 kilometers. It is expected to improve the layout and connections of traffic routes in the area. It will also provide more space for walking and cycling.
