The Hunan Provincial Health Commission and Central South University have launched an investigation into a senior doctor at the university's Third Xiangya Hospital after nine of her subordinates reported her misconduct in a public letter with their real names attached.

According to a notice issued by the commission and university on Thursday, a joint investigation has been set up into all claims made in the letter.

If the claims are true, the doctor will be dealt with according to the law and regulations.

In China, many well-known universities have affiliated hospitals to nurture medical students. The hospitals are under the management of the universities and local health authorities.

The doctor, Meng Jie, is director of the hospital's respiratory and critical care medicine department. She used to be deputy director of the respiratory department of at Xiangya Hospital Central South University and was transferred in 2020.

The letter claimed since Meng assumed the post, her misconduct has been "endless" and she has seriously jeopardized the department's development and reputation.

From May to August 2022, the department had two deaths from bronchoscopy, which were performed by Meng's student Zou Lijuan independently. Zou was still on probation and had not received qualification from health authorities or the hospital to conduct the operation, the letter alleged, also stating Meng asked other doctors to take the blame.

The letter also claimed that Meng gave herself a much higher performance salary than other doctors and set up her own "private coffer" by taking up the performance salaries of the department. The doctors said she "hogs" research projects and funds.

Moreover, they allege Meng has bullied colleagues that do not listen to her and elbowed five doctors out of the hospital.

Jiang Hong, president of the hospital, told the Paper.cn the hospital has begun a preliminary investigation, which will be released to the public after it is verified by the commission and the university.
