Beijing's cumulative concentration of PM2.5 during the first half of 2023 was 37 micrograms per cubic meter, down 21.3% from the same period in 2019, according to Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau. The figure was the second lowest on record for the period, underscoring the city's continuous improvements to its air quality.
During the first half of this year, Beijing remained committed to safeguarding blue skies. A special 100-day initiative was launched to tackle dust pollution, while industry- and policy-based emission reduction measures were consistently advanced. As a result, the city witnessed a substantial reduction in average road dust load, as well as a modest year-on-year decline in PM10 concentration.
In addition, the rollout of coal-burning controls in 37,900 rural households and the full-scale grid deployment were achieved, while notable strides were made in the treatment of volatile organic compounds in 37 enterprises.
At the same time, Beijing also released key guidelines for achieving the dual carbon reduction goals. The city achieved a cumulative green power transaction volume of around 1.1 billion kWh through market-based and green power transactions, and strengthened its management of 14 power generation enterprises and nearly 1,300 entities included in the city's carbon market.
Furthermore, remarkable advancements have been achieved in the execution of action plans focused on safeguarding clean water and enhancing biological diversity.
Going forward, Beijing will continue to intensify its efforts to curb pollution. The city will accelerate the green and low-carbon transition, prioritizing the enhancement of the diversity, stability and sustainability of the ecosystem.
