Two agricultural cultivation systems of Beijing - chestnut in Huairou district and Beijing White Pear in Mentougou district - were added to the important Chinese agricultural heritage list recently released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. This increased the city's total number of such agricultural heritages to four.

The record of chestnut cultivation in Huairou district dates back more than 2,000 years. In 2007, Huairou was recognized as a geographical origin of chestnuts. Currently, the district has about 9 million chestnut trees covering an area of 217,000 mu (14,467 hectares). As a rare natural breed, Beijing White Pear is instrumental in protecting agricultural germplasm resources.

The two agricultural products were both used as tributes to royal families during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911).

The city will step up efforts to preserve and inherit agricultural heritages, protect agricultural resources, and promote earnings of local farmers.
