As part of Beijing’s ongoing efforts to achieve coal-free heat supply, the city has helped nearly 30,000 rural households of 88 villages in five districts to switch from coal to electricity as the heating source, the municipal commission of development and reform said Monday.

Beijing has conducted two rounds of clean energy heating projects this year, constructing and upgrading power grids of nearly 110 kilometers in the rural areas in five districts of Huairou, Miyun, Fangshan, Shunyi, and Yanqing. In addition, over 600 transformers have been upgraded during the green campaign.

According to the city’s economic planner, those projects have further optimized the heating system of the capital, effectively reducing pollution from burning coal and improving the living environment in the countryside.

Beijing began a campaign to reduce coal use in 2013. As of the end of 2022, around 1.35 million rural households of 3,557 villages across Beijing had converted to electric heating. Ninety percent of villages and 93% of rural households in Beijing had adopted clean energy for heating, and the remaining had gained access to high-quality and less polluting coal.
